Your Portfolio

Optimise your Portfolio by Miss A.V. Wong MBChB Sheffield MRCS Edinburgh

A portfolio is primarily to document your career. It reflects what you have done, what you have achieved and what you aim to do. It is an essential component for a job interview or annual review in training.

I use a ring binder with dividers, dividing the contents into different components. My first page is a cover with my details on. The portfolio is divided into:

- Personal Details includes curriculum vitae, degree certificate, GMC registration.

- Educational Supervision includes learning needs, personal development plan, educational meetings (initial, midpoint and end of placement).

- Assessments: Case Based Discussion (CBD), Mini Clinical Evaluation Exercise (mini CEX), Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS), Multi-source 360° feedback.

- Surgical Log to log surgical procedures.

- Patient Log to log clinical experience and patient encounters.

- Academic/Research Activities includes publications, papers, presentations and audits.

- Teaching includes teaching slides and presentations and student feedback on my teaching.

- Learning includes certificates of meetings, courses attended and also self-directed learning.

- Patient Feedback and Gratification includes patient feedback, thank you letters and cards.

- Miscellaneous for all else that doesn’t fit into above categories or extra-curricular activities.

I hope this helps you to tailor-make your own individual portfolio that will help you in your career. I have included some forms here for you to download and use for your  own portfolio.
